Case in point? There are people getting paid to simply TALK without ever leaving their homes. This isn’t some magical way to make money. It’s simply working from home as a voice actor (also commonly called a voice-over artist).
Nowadays, it’s easier than ever to become a voice actor from home, even if you have no experience.
If you like making voices, you’re a pro at reading books aloud with different voices for all the characters, or you love mimicking other people and characters, you’re in a good place to start a voice acting career.
Right now, it’s easier than ever for newbies to break into this field. You don’t need to have some Hollywood connection or work with an agent to make money this way. What you do need, though, is the right home setup and a great-sounding voice.

1. Have the Right Equipment and Environment
The tricky thing about providing voice over work from home is that you need to have a home setup that mimics a studio. Most of us don’t have a sound booth and professional microphone in our spare bedroom, which means you have to invest some time and effort into setting up the right equipment.
Unfortunately, voice acting isn’t the kind of job you can start bare-bones and then slowly purchase equipment as you keep going. If you want to succeed, you need to have the right quality equipment from the start.
Now, this doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but it is an initial startup cost. Nearly every small business requires some initial investment, and a voice over business from home is no different.
Some of the things you may want or need include:
- A quality microphone
- Microphone stand
- Pop filter (this is a screen that diffuses the pop and hiss sounds you hear when someone speaks an “S” or a “P” too closely into the microphone)
- Shock mount (this reduces unwanted rumblings and vibrations in the microphone)
There will also be software you need, but that can be found for free.
Additionally, you will need to find a room in your home that you can setup in such a way to mimic a sound booth. The acoustics of your room are very important, so you want to set the room up in such a way that you can’t hear any feedback or background noise.
You can buy sound panels and other soundproofing materials, or you can make do with hanging thick curtains or heavy blankets on your wall. Unlike the equipment, this is something you can fudge a bit until you start making money and can afford a more professional setup.
This might sound like a lot of overkill – you don’t even have any experience yet, right? But unfortunately, voice acting is not the kind of work at home position where you can start small and build your way up.
You need to audition for every job, which means you’ll be competing against people who do have more experience, along with professional sounding setups at home. If you don’t sound like a pro right out of the gate, you’ll have a much harder time ever landing any work.

2. Get the Right Training
While you potentially can make it as a voice over artist without any training, your chances of success are much greater if you get the right education.

3. Market Yourself Correctly
If you want to be treated like a professional, you need to act like a professional. This is easy to do, even if you have no work experience to speak of.
For starters, what will potential clients see when they research your name online? Consider what kind of presence you have on the web, especially on those social media profiles.
If you don’t have a professional website for your voice acting services, now’s the time to create one.
It’s so easy these days to create a nice-looking website on a platform like Squarespace or Wix. If you can, use your name as your domain name. Put a nice headshot of yourself on your site, and include “Voice Over Artist” as your title.
The website is also a great place to highlight your education and training (like that voice-over course you took), and you can even add audio samples for potential clients to hear.
If you have any testimonials or feedback you can share, do so front and center on your site. You want to make yourself appear as professional as possible.
If you don’t have a professional website for your voice acting services, now’s the time to create one.
Next, make sure you offer a clear and easy way for potential clients to contact you. A contact form on the site is an easy way to do this.
While it’s easiest to find many clients through a freelancing platform or voice over job board, it’s important to have this additional web presence.
It helps boost your credibility as a voice-over pro, and it gives you an additional place to direct potential clients, especially if you’re doing work for a local business or community organization.
4. Create a Great Demo
One of the great things about voice acting is that you really don’t need any prior experience, because clients don’t care about your past.
Believe it or not, they won’t care if you’ve been a voice-over artist for award-winning commercials, or if you’ve done absolutely nothing at all. They only care about what you can do for their business right now.
It doesn’t matter if you say your voice acting was great five years ago. What does matter is what your voice sounds like currently. Potential clients are unlikely to hire you if they have no idea what your voice sounds like. A demo is the key to offering that insight.
While you can and should list all of your voice acting abilities, that list is nothing more than words if you can’t back it up with actual proof.
That’s where your demo comes in.
You want to clearly show your potential clients everything that you’re able to do with your voice.
If you’re able to do various styles, languages, and dialects, provide a demo reel for each one. Remember that you only have a few moments to hook the listener, so it’s important to be compelling right away.
Don’t make your demo reels especially long, and don’t provide a lengthy introduction before starting your voice acting.
A demo is something you’ll have to do often (every time you audition for a job), so this is good practice for you anyway. The more you do them, the better you’ll get at wowing the client and proving what you can do with your voice.
Remember again, that past experience has nothing to do with this. A demo proves what you can do right now, and is far more important to a client than a well-rounded resume.
5. Look Local
A great way to break into the voice acting field and get some much-needed experience as well as client testimonials is to provide free or local voice services.
Perhaps there is an organization in your local area that needs voice-over work, or a community event is looking for someone to provide this service.
Your competition will often be far less if you look locally, and you could even volunteer to provide the voice services. While this may mean you’re working for free, it gives you a gig to put on your resume and you can ask for a testimonial and copy of the reel afterwards to use as social proof on your website.
6. Start Networking
Networking is one of the best ways to gain new clients, especially if you have no experience.
In theory, all you need is one person to give you a chance in order to break into the field of voice acting.
One of the best ways to network is to start with other voice actors. Search out and join Facebook groups and forums for voice over artists. Start spending time on various social media platforms where people in this career field hang out.
Along the way, read, listen, and learn. Start to make meaningful contributions to conversations in order to network and make relationships with people.
Many times, if a voice actor is unable or unwilling to take a job, he or she might recommend someone else for the role. Tat someone else could be you. Even if you don’t land a job this way, networking is an excellent way to pick up industry tips and inside information – things that are crucial for any newbie in the field.
7. Hire a Voice Coach
If you’re new to voice-over and are serious about making this a career, a voice coach can absolutely help you. The statistics don’t lie – voice-over jobs are more in-demand than ever, and having a voice-over coach is critical to helping you land one of these roles.
The voice coach will teach you the skill of voice acting – this is invaluable if you have no experience!
Moreover, a good voice instructor has a lot of insight as to how the voice-over industry works. He or she will help you overcome common voice over mistakes, train your voice in the methods of technical voice acting, and help you become a better actor as you use your voice.
If you’re a beginner, hiring a voice coach is a no-brainer. After all, you don’t know what you don’t know. A voice coach is crucial to helping you wade through that process.
Don’t think that using a voice coach is just for beginners, either. Almost all professional voice-over artists use voice instructors at one point or another. Many will even use different instructors to hone different skills.
