You don’t need a full-time job to make an extra $1000 a month. In fact, all you need is a computer with an Internet connection. Here are 17 ideas for ways you can make an extra grand on a part-time basis, just working online.

2. Work as a Virtual Assistant

The average VA makes over $67,000 a year – far more than $1000 a month! Even doing this job on a part-time basis gives you the opportunity to earn some serious extra cash from home.

A virtual assistant is anyone who works from home providing tasks and services for another business or entrepreneur. The job description is slightly vague because it takes on a wide variety of forms.

Here are just a few of the tasks you could do as a virtual assistant:

  • Write blog posts
  • Manage social media
  • Manage email correspondence
  • Create printables
  • Graphic design
  • Schedule appointments or meetings
  • Handle accounting or bookkeeping
  • Do data entry or research

As you can see, the possibilities are endless. One of the best things about working as a virtual assistant is that you can choose to offer the tasks that you’re comfortable with, and then only offer those services to your clients.

You can definitely make good money doing this work-from-home job, and it’s something you can easily scale. If you only want to work part-time that’s no problem – but you can also easily replace a full-time income working as a VA.

3. Offer Freelance Writing

Freelance writing is a solid way to make an extra $1000 a month, and it’s something I personally have been doing from home for the past 11 years.

I continue to make at least $1000 freelance writing (usually much more) and this is not something I am doing full-time – in fact, I am able to do this while I am homeschooling my four children and working on other side projects, like this blog!

I always say that freelance writing is one of the best ways for a beginner to start working from home. You don’t need formal training or any special schooling. Don’t worry if you didn’t ace all of those high school or college essays – this kind of writing is much different. You just need to understand how to explain things in conversational English.

Here are just a few of the things you can work on as a freelance writer:

  • Blog posts
  • Long-form articles
  • Recipes
  • Product reviews
  • eBooks
  • White papers
  • Promotional materials
  • Marketing emails
  • Social media posts

The list goes on.

4. Teach English Online

Many work-at-home moms (and dads!) teach English online. Typically, this job involves teaching English to students from around the world. Often, you do need to be able to commit to a regular schedule since your students will be relying on you to “show up,” but this can be a fun and interesting way to earn some extra income.

There are several online companies that will hire you to do this, including VIPKid, Cambly, and Preply.

5. Work as an Online Tutor

If you love helping others or teaching is your jam, working as an online tutor is a nice way to make an extra $1000 a month.

This is similar to teaching English online, but you can tutor just about any subject under the sun. And while teaching English is often easiest under an umbrella company, you’ll usually be able to make more money tutoring if you find clients on your own, rather than working as a contractor for someone else.

Tutoring online is fast becoming the preferred form of tutoring, because it has so many perks: you don’t have to arrange to meet a student in your own home AND you don’t need to leave your house to meet the student, you have greater flexibility as to the hours when you’re available to tutor, and you aren’t limited to those students who only live in your area.

In fact, when you’re an online tutor, you can meet with students who live anywhere around the world!

Tutoring is a very lucrative job, as many parents are willing to pay top dollar to ensure their children are well-educated. If you have teaching experience or a higher-education degree, you’ll be able to command an even higher price.

6. Offer Transcription

Transcription is a job that requires listening to audio files and then typing what you hear. If you’re a fast typer and are able to pay close attention to detail, you may enjoy this type of work-at-home job.

According to some reports, the average annual income for a work-from-home transcriptionist is over $58,000.

That works out to well over $1,000 a month, so even if you’re working part-time you stand to make at least a grand.

Unfortunately, though, this is not an easy field to just jump into if you don’t have any training or experience. There is one course that’s ready-made to teach transcriptionists who want to work from home called Transcribe Anywhere.

This company offers a free mini-course which is a good way to decide whether or not this job will be the best way for you to make an extra $1000 a month.

7. Work as a Proofreader

Proofreading is reading documents and looking for errors. If you have a good knowledge of grammar and punctuation, and you have an eagle eye for spotting the small stuff, this may be an easy way for you to earn an extra $1000 a month online.

Proofreading is a bit similar to transcription in that it’s a difficult field to just start in without any prior training or experience. That’s why I like the course offered by Knowadays.

The multi-step guide in the flagship course, Becoming a Proofreader, shows you everything you need to know to learn how to proofread. If you pass the course, you’re also guaranteed employment with their partner company, Proofed – a nice perk!

8. Blogging

You won’t be able to make $1000 the first month you have a blog, but if you work on it long enough it’s certainly possible to get there. In fact, many bloggers make tens of thousands of dollars per month.

The key is to choose a topic, or niche, for your blog and then write as much as you can about that topic. Generally, you want to answer common questions people have, so that they’ll find you when they search that question on Google.

The money comes through either ads that you place on your site, sponsored posts, or affiliate offers. In general, the more people you can get to visit your site, the more money you will make.

It sounds simple enough, but it does take time – and a little know-how. If you’d like to explore this work at home option but have no idea where or how to start, I suggest heading over to Suzy at Start a Mom Blog. She lays out everything you need to know in step-by-step guides that are written for the average person.

9. Work as a Pinterest Virtual Assistant

Many bloggers and business owners utilize Pinterest as a way to drive traffic to their website and generate sales for their business.

Pinterest is a powerful tool for entrepreneurs, but it can be incredibly time-consuming. Creating beautiful, click-worthy pins is a timely process, and the platform is always changing its best practices, so it can be hard for business owners to always know when and how often to post.

As a Pinterest virtual assistant, you could handle these details. You would have to know and understand the ins and outs of how Pinterest works, as well as know how to create eye-catching pins. This isn’t something you need to figure out all on your own — there are scheduling and graphic design tools you can use to help you.

But once you do know how to do this, you can easily manage this service for several clients and make at least $1000 a month.

10. Work as a Social Media Manager

Social media is another important and impactful way for entrepreneurs and business owners to reach clients and customers, but it can also takes lots of time to manage.

You’re probably already spending time on social media throughout the day, so why not use it to make money?

Working as a social media manager, you’ll take over the time-consuming tasks of taking pictures, scheduling posts, creating ads, and responding to comments or messages for busy business owners.

There are scheduling apps to help you, so you wouldn’t need to be online all the time. If you work as a social media manager for several business owners, you could easily make $1000 a month or more.

11. Work as a Graphic Designer

It’s fairly easy to work from home as a graphic designer – all you need is a computer and the right kind of software. While at one time it may have been ideal to go to school for this kind of career, it isn’t essential anymore.

As long as you know how – and you have a great eye for design – this is a work-from-home job you can do as a freelancer.

12. Sell your handmade items with an Etsy shop

Are you artistic or is there something that you’re good at making that you could sell to others? Etsy is the top online marketplace for selling handmade items.

Here are just a few ideas for things you can sell:

  • Jewelry
  • Artwork
  • Soaps and lotions
  • Needlework
  • Woodwork
  • Printables
  • Paper designs
  • Candles
  • Magnets
  • Stickers

The list of possibilities is really endless. If you’re stuck for ideas, head over to Etsy and browse the best-selling items to see what kinds of things people are buying.

While Etsy does require work — you have to make these items and ship them — it is possible to make an extra $1000 a month selling on this platform.

13. Work as an Online Coach

Do you have knowledge in a specific field and a talent for helping people? If so, you could work as an online coach.

As a coach, you’d be a motivational guide for people who want to learn something or achieve a specific goal.

There are many ways you can reach an audience online – social media, videos, Zoom calls, and accountability groups are just a few common methods – and depending on your expertise, you could easily make more than $1000 per month.

14. Work as a Bookkeeper

There are many stay-at-home parents who make $1000 a month or more working as a bookkeeper.

You don’t have to be an accountant to do this – they are not the same – but you would keep track of invoices and accounts payable and receivable for small businesses.

Working as a bookkeeper does require you to be organized and on-task, especially because you’ll be managing money for other people. But if you’re responsible and you like numbers, this can be a solid, steady way to bring in extra income each month.

15. Work as an Online Teacher on Outschool

If you love to teach but would rather not tutor one-on-one, try teaching a class instead. Outschool is a popular platform for many teachers who want to teach classes on their own.

The classes have become extremely popular among homeschool parents who are looking for extra help for their kids, or anyone who wants to learn a new subject.

There is a wide variety of classes, and you can choose what to teach, how often you want to teach, and what to charge. If you find people who sign up and like what you do, you’ll rise through the ranks as parents seek out your classes, giving you the opportunity to make a nice consistent income.

16. Teach music or voice lessons

If you’re musically inclined, you can make an extra $1000 per month offering music or voice lessons. The great thing about this is that you can do it either in person or virtually from the comfort of your own home.

When you teach lessons, especially in-person to people in your local area, you have the benefit of setting a schedule that works for you, and you can fix your own prices. You also get the benefit of word-of-mouth, too, if you are able to reach enough people in your local area.

Teaching online does offer a little more flexibility and convenience, but you might find you have to pay for a platform or service to use, and you might face more competition, which could drive your prices down.

Either way, this is a nice way to earn an extra income.

17. Flip Items

Flipping means that you buy low-cost items from yard sales or thrift stores, fix them up if necessary, and resell them for a higher price. Many flippers utilize online marketplaces like Etsy or Facebook Marketplace to manage their transactions.

This can be a fun way to make an extra $1000 a month, but you do need to be prepared to scour the sales and know a good deal when you see one.

You also need to have vision and be able to recognize when a can of paint and some new hardware will really restore a piece, or if that dusty old dresser on the side of the road is doomed beyond repair. If you have this talent (which is something I definitely don’t!), you’ll find willing buyers in people like me who love a solid and beautiful piece of furniture but are unable to figure out how to create it ourselves.
