If you’re good at spotting mistakes, enjoy reading, and have a good grasp on English grammar, proofreading may be a great job for you. Proofreading Academy is a company that offers several online courses to help people get started with a proofreading job.
Proofreading is the final step in the content creation process. Before people write a book, publish an article, or post a blog post, they want to make sure that it looks and sounds perfect. A proofreader acts as a fresh set of eyes on a document before it is published.
Proofreaders regularly check for spelling, syntax, grammar, and punctuation errors. You don’t need a college degree to work as a proofreader, and you don’t even need to remember everything you learned in your seventh grade English class. A good course like Proofreading Academy will go over all the basic rules and ins and outs you need to know in order to become a proofreader.
This Proofreading Academy review will help you decide if this is a course you should take.
Why Choose Proofreading?
As a busy mom of young children, I’m always on the lookout for work at home jobs that make sense for moms. Ideal jobs are those that are flexible, pay well, and can be done in your spare time.
Proofreading definitely fits the bill. In fact, some stay at home moms now make a full-time income just with proofreading!
Most proofreaders are freelancers who get their work through online companies. This kind of work can come through freelance job sites like Freelancer.com, or through proofreading companies like Proofed.
While the truth is, you probably would have to work A LOT to make full-time money with a proofreading job, you can absolutely earn a very decent part-time income with this work at home position. Many proofreaders pick up work when and if they’re able, which leaves them free to make money in their spare time.

What is Proofreading Academy?
Proofreading Academy is a company that teaches modern proofreading methods to help people become freelance proofreaders.
Through the Proofreading Academy flagship course, you can expect to learn proofreading techniques for every type of document. The course also covers academic proofreading and basic business proofreading.
The company is based in the United Kingdom, but they serve English-speaking clients all over the world. In fact, there is an “Our Team” page on the company website that offers a bio of all their employees.
It is nice to see that the team is comprised of workers who live all over the world, including English-speaking countries like the United States, Australia, and South Africa. So, while the company is based in the U.K., you definitely do not have to live there in order to benefit from this program.
What Kind of Reviews Does Proofreading Academy Have?
If you’re looking for Proofreading Academy reviews, there is no better place to look than students who have taken the class.
As of the time of this writing, there is a lot of positive feedback about Proofreading Academy. It currently receives a 4.8/5 star rating out of 228 reviews on Trustpilot.
Here is a look at some of the reviews:
There are lots more very positive reviews just like these. Students routinely say that they learn a lot, even if they already considered themselves to be literate and good at grammar. They also enjoy the format of the online classes and the responsiveness of the tutors.
One thing that I was happy to see was that many of these reviews are recent. This isn’t something you need to worry about being outdated or old. People are taking the course and leaving good reviews now.
I also found a Reddit thread with some excellent feedback from students who had taken the course. One reviewer said, “I have already started the course and it’s far better than the other proofreading courses I’ve done. It’s much more comprehensive, easy to understand, and contains great examples.”
In addition to these testimonials, there is a “Success Stories” page on the Proofreading Academy website, where you can read some of the positive experiences people have had after taking the program.
Proofreading Academy Course Breakdown
What exactly will you learn with Proofreading Academy? The main course contains ten modules and takes 40 hours to complete. The Proofreading Academy course covers the following:
- Proofreading and editing
- The basics of Microsoft Word
- Common spelling mistakes
- Common grammar mistakes
- Common punctuation mistakes
- Other common errors
- Proofreading in practice: style
- Proofreading in practice: academic proofreading
- Referencing and citations
- Advanced formatting in Microsoft word
The course is laid out in video and written format. At the end of each module, there is an end-of-module assessment. These assessments aren’t graded, but the final assessment at the end of the course is. You have three chances to pass the end-of-course assessment with a score of 80 percent or higher to qualify for employment with Proofed.
The course is regularly updated, so you can be sure you’re receiving the latest information. Additionally, if you’re having difficulty with a portion of the course, you can chat with a tutor who is very responsive and there to help you succeed.
If you don’t need all of the information that the flagship course offers, Proofreading Academy offers several other training courses as well. These are:
Their signature course, Becoming a Proofreader, teaches you everything you need to know about working as a proofreader, while the other courses are more specialized areas.
Proofreading Academy does offer a free trial to give you a chance to decide if this course is right for you. In the trial, you’ll be given one week to complete a sample module.
The Biggest Reason You Should Join Proofreading Academy
One of the best things about Proofreading Academy is that it guarantees that you will have employment following completion of the course, as long as you pass with a grade of 80 percent or better.
Just look at what it says, directly on the course page:
GUARANTEED WORK After you have completed this course and obtained a distinction grade of 80% or above on the final assignments we will connect you with our proofreader partner to start work as a freelance proofreader!
This is an amazing perk, and one that I haven’t seen in any other course, ever.
If you’re nervous about shelling out money for the cost of the course, you can rest assured that you will at least have some employment coming in after you complete the course. The kicker is you must pass with that 80 percent grade, but this is expected for you to get any employment.
After all, if you’re going to work as a freelance proofreader, the client needs to know that you know what you’re doing!
Other Benefits of Proofreading Academy
Working with Proofed isn’t the only advantage of taking the Proofreading Academy course. This course also helps you build up proofreading experience so you can start working as a proofreader on other platforms also.
Having a certificate that certifies you completed a proofreading course gives you a leg up over the competition and makes you more appealing to clients who may be looking to hire a freelance proofreader.
How Much Money Can You Make as a Proofreader?
As with any freelancing job, the amount of money you make varies greatly on the client that you work for and the amount at which you work. After glancing on a freelancing site like Upwork.com, I found freelancing positions with pay rates ranging from $15 to $45 per hour.
If you need to make a full-time income from home, it will probably be hard to do it by proofreading alone. A better option would be to offer freelance writing services in addition to proofreading. Because writing is a lot of grammar and good diction, many proofreaders also make excellent writers.
Proofreading is a great option for a side job. If you need to make some extra cash or are looking to diversify your income without overcomplicating your work load, proofreading is a good choice.
Is Proofreading Academy Worth It?
At the time of publication, Proofreading Academy’s flagship course costs $295. This covers everything you need to know about working from home as a proofreader.
Is spending all this money worth it? That depends, but for most people who work from home, the answer is yes.
As a work at home mom, I’ve spend hundreds of dollars myself (if not more), on learning what it takes to be a successful freelance writer and blogger.
Just as people pay to go to college and university in order to get a good-paying job afterward, so too you should expect to pay for a work from home education.
Proofreading Academy offers payment plans for anyone who may have trouble paying the full amount upfront. Just contact them and they are more than happy to work with you.
How Does This Compare to Other Proofreading Courses?
I saw several reviews that specifically called Proofreading Academy the best proofreading course out there. Some reviewers were comparing Proofreading Academy to the Proofread Anywhere course.
While Proofread Anywhere seems to have gotten good reviews when it was first created several years ago, it generally gets poor reviews now. Some students spoke of having abandoned the Proofread Anywhere course halfway through and moving to Proofreading Academy, which they liked much better.
Proofreading Academy is also less expensive than some other proofreading courses, and you get the added perk of guaranteed employment which is well worth it.
What is Proofed?
One of the biggest benefits of learning how to proofread with Proofreading Academy is that it comes with the employment guarantee. If you pass the course with a score of 80 percent or higher, Proofed will hire you as a freelance proofreader.
Proofed is a respected international network of freelance proofreading businesses. It has branches in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. If you pass the Proofreading Academy course, you get access to the Proofed internal job boards, where you see the proofreading work available each day.
As a newbie freelancer, the helpful people at Proofed will also work with you, starting you off on smaller documents so that you can work your way up to bigger, higher-paying work. Pay is monthly by bank transfer.
As with anything, there is no guarantee of how much work will be available. However, in my research I did not see people complaining of the lack of work. In fact, I only saw positive remarks as to how much work was readily available to the freelance proofreaders.
What Do I Need to Successfully Complete Proofreading Academy?
If you want to take the Proofreading Academy course, you do need to have a working computer with Microsoft Word (2016 or higher version).
If you’ll notice, Microsoft Word makes up two components of the training program. You do need to use Microsoft and not some other word processing program in order to complete this course. So, if you don’t currently have Microsoft Word on your computer, that may be another expense for you to purchase.
Proofreading Academy Customer Service
Another aspect of Proofreading Academy that really impressed me was their customer service. If you have any questions or concerns about the course, they are more than happy to schedule a phone call to discuss your needs.
They will even email you this information in the days following your course signup. You don’t need to go digging for a number – the link in the email takes you directly to a calendar page where you can schedule a call with them. If you have any questions about the course or want to discuss setting up a payment plan, it is easy to do this on the call.
Final Thoughts – My Proofreading Academy Review
If you are thinking seriously about becoming a work at home proofreader, Proofreading Academy may be a good option for helping you hone your skills.
While the main course covers the basics of proofreading rather than the nitty-gritty of finding your own clients as a freelancer, it does offer the clear benefit of guaranteed employment with Proofed afterwards.
While there is no telling how much work you may get with this company, it does give you the chance to gain some actual paid experience, plus it gives you something to put in your portfolio or resume.
All in all, I think that Proofreading Academy is a solid choice for anyone looking to work from home.
