Top Benefits of Being a Virtual Assistant: Why This Can Be a Good Job

If you’re looking for a work-from-home job, it’s only natural to want something that ticks all the boxes – flexible, high-paying, and something you can do in your PJs while your kids play at your feet.

That may sound like a dream, but it’s a reality for the many people who work as virtual assistants. Many people hear the term “virtual assistant” and they start to wonder what this job is all about.

Is it really that great, or does it just mean that you’re working from home as a glorified secretary? I hope to shed some light on this online job for you.

Working as a virtual assistant is a good job if you are organized, like helping people, and want to work from home. Because you can pick and choose what services to offer, a virtual assistant also enjoys more flexibility and earning potential than other job positions.

Working as a Virtual Assistant is a Good Job if You Are Organized

A good virtual assistant needs to be organized. This is because you’ll be juggling a variety of tasks for multiple clients. Add in the responsibilities of caring for your kids and your household, and it can be a lot to handle.

If you aren’t organized, it’s easy for overwhelm to creep its way in.

Part of this organization comes in the form of firmly separating business and work. Carve out time for both exclusively during your day.

Trust me, I’ve tried to multi-task, and it usually doesn’t work very well. While you can do certain tasks while watching TV with your kids, you need to make sure you have undivided time for work too.

(And don’t forget to carve out distraction-free time with your kiddos. They need to have your full attention too).

Using a planner or an online tracker like Trello or Asana goes a long way in helping you stay on task.

I also like to keep a schedule and prioritize my most important tasks throughout the day.

When you take on a new responsibility like a work from home job, it can definitely take some getting used to. As long as you’re organized though, you’ll eventually get in your groove and figure out how to make it work for your family.

If you can stay organized, working as a virtual assistant can be a great job.

Working as a VA is Great if You Like Helping People

As a virtual assistant, you’ll be working directly with many clients. As long as you are personable and like helping others, this job will be a great fit.

Keep in mind that your clients – whether they’re struggling entrepreneurs or corporate businesses – are just people. And these people all have different wants, needs, and personalities.

Some will certainly be easier to deal with than others. Some will be high maintenance, while others will be your dream client, with little expectations and a great appreciation for everything you do.

You have to really like helping people to succeed as a virtual assistant, since this is the main focus of your job. Whether your client is difficult or easy, at the end of the day your job is to perform a service that makes their life easier.

It can be challenging, but if you like helping people, you’ll be able to provide that high-quality, professional service to even the most difficult clients.

And remember, if they’re really that bad, you don’t have to work for them again!

Virtual Assistant is a Good Job if You’re Tech-Savvy

You don’t have to be totally techy, but running an online business does require a bit of technical know-how.

For instance, if your client asks you to use a task management platform, you’re going to have to know how that works.

You may also need to know how to manage a Pinterest account, or how to upload a new post in WordPress.

Luckily, most of the things are relatively easy to learn, and it’s very easy to find information on the web.

You don’t need to have lots of tech-related background or even current knowledge, but you do need to be willing and able to learn new skills.

While you certainly don’t have to offer any services that you aren’t familiar with, it’s also true that the more specialized and knowledgeable you are, the more clients you’re likely to land.

Once you’re comfortable with the tech-side of things and are willing and able to educate yourself on those things you don’t know, you’ll have a much easier time working as a VA.

Want to Work From Home? Virtual Assistant is a Great Job for That

Probably one of the best reasons that working as a virtual assistant is a good job is because it enables you to work from home.

Working from home comes with so many advantages. If you’re a parent trying to raise your young children, working from home means you can be with them all day rather than sending them to daycare.

You can also be there for school-age kids when they need help with homework or have to stay home from school.

Working from home isn’t great for just parents. There are a lot of other perks too, like no more commute, no more unpleasant coworkers, and, best of all, no working hard for someone else’s profit.

C’mon, what sounds better than working from the comfort of your couch when the weather is bad?

Working as a Virtual Assistant is Ideal if You Want to Be Your Own Boss

There is so much freedom and flexibility that comes from working for yourself. When you work as a virtual assistant, your earning potential is limitless. You can really control what you do and when you do it (see more on these perks below!).

Still, you need to have a certain desire to be your own boss. Working from home and running an online business requires a lot of grit, determination, and a strong work ethic.

There will be a lot of times when you don’t want to get up early to get the work in, or you’d rather binge-watch a Netflix show than pitch to potential clients.

I’ll be honest with you – I rarely watch TV. In fact, most of my free time is spent on actual work. While it is important to step back and take a break occasionally (burnout is real!), there’s no clocking out at the end of the day for me.

And that’s ok.

Because when I look at the things I get in return – the ability to stay home with my kids, take them to activities, and even homeschool them, all while making an income – I count myself grateful that I am in this position.

Still, in order to be successful as a virtual assistant, you do need to really want it. This means tuning out the distractions and digging deep for the motivation to keep going when times are difficult.

Other Benefits of Being a Virtual Assistant

If you have the above character traits, you’ll likely find that working as a virtual assistant is a great job. But there are also other benefits of being a VA, too.

Here are some of the best perks:

As a Virtual Assistant, You Decide How to Structure Your Business

Don’t like cold calling? As a virtual assistant you don’t have to.

Love cold calling? On the other hand, you can totally make this part of your virtual assistant package!

As a virtual assistant you have more flexibility than a lot of the other work from home jobs.

That’s because you can choose exactly which virtual assistant services you want to offer.

In fact, the more niched down you are, the more successful you’re likely to be.

This flexibility makes working as a virtual assistant a great job. You have the freedom to do exactly the kind of work you want to do, and if there are tasks you don’t like or are not so skilled at, you don’t need to offer them to your clients.

You Have a Lot of Flexibility as a Virtual Assistant

One of the best things about working from home as a freelancer is that you have a lot of flexibility as to when you complete your tasks.

This is true for many virtual assistants. While some VA’s need to work certain hours for their clients, others find that there is no time constraint as long as your tasks are completed by their deadline.

This is great news for work at home moms.

One of the reasons I started working from home as a freelance writer (which is a service many VAs offer) was because I was able to work when I had free time.

This meant getting up early before the kids, writing during naptime, and then again in the evening after they were asleep.

I’m now homeschooling my children, and the flexibility continues.

As a freelance virtual assistant setting your own hours, it makes no difference whether you work at 5 a.m. or 5 p.m. You also have the flexibility to work from your couch, the local coffee shop, or vacation in Tahiti.

You can’t ask for a more flexible job, and that’s a perk you’ll be hard-pressed to find even if you’re working remotely for a brick-and-mortar business.

You Have an Unlimited Earning Potential as a Virtual Assistant

One of the best perks that makes working as a virtual assistant a good job is that you are in complete control over how much money you make.

Once you work for yourself, you’re no longer a slave to a 9-5 wage. Now, you can set your rates.

Of course, this goes both ways. You’re responsible for finding clients who are willing to pay you, and there’s no slacking off in this position. If you don’t work, you don’t earn.

Still, if you give yourself a good foundation, you have a great chance of setting yourself up for success. Many virtual assistants make six figures a year, which is an amazing accomplishment for moms who are home with their kids.

If you do a good job and are able to scale your business, there are plenty of clients who are willing to pay top-dollar for your virtual assistant services.

Final Verdict: Working as a Virtual Assistant is a Great Way to Make Money From Home

I think it’s clear to see that working as a virtual assistant is a great way to earn from home.

In fact, it has so many benefits that it’s one of the top jobs I recommend for moms who are looking for a way to work while they’re home with their kids, but they just aren’t sure where to start.

The benefits like flexibility, customization, and earning potential make this a job for anyone who needs to earn from home.
